A Drill Press specifically designed for Woodworkers

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Delta laser drillI don’t know about you but I hate fiddling about lining up a piece of wood under my drill press - so I’m absolutely delighted to see that finally someone has added a laser sight. Other woodworking tools have had them for ages!

Delta laser drillIt’s on the top two drill presses from the new range by Delta, which are available now at Rockler. The laser is not all they’ve done though.

There’s a handy removable insert in the table, which also has a woodworker-friendly T-Slot, and tilts 0-45° forward and 0-90° left and right with positive stops at 0°, 45°, and 90°. It’s clearly built for power and durability and has 12 speeds so you can cope with drilling just about any material including plastics and metal. There are nice touches like the flexible worklamp and smooth-running induction motor.

Definitely a quality bit of kit - now I just need to have a word with Santa….

A full range of Delta drilling and boring tools is available at Rockler.com. Click the link for more info.

Freud’s Premier Fusion Saw Blades - A New Standard in General Purpose Saw Blades?

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Freud’s award winning Premier Fusion General Purpose Saw Blades have been around for about a year in 10″ form - and have gone down very well with the woodworkers. They’re not cheap, but the design and build qualities produce such a good cut - ripping or crosscutting - that many are more than happy to hand over their cash. It really is one blade that does it all, ideal for hard and soft wood, veneered plywood and melamine.

Now the same technology is available in a 12″ saw blade, perfect for use in table saws and chop saws. For those interested in the detail this features:

  • “Fusion” Tooth Design - Double side ground design fused with Hi-ATB tooth geometry gives glass smooth side finishes as well as a chip-free top and bottom during both ripping and crosscutting applications.
  • Perma-SHIELD Permanent Non-Stick Coating that protects it against corrosion, gumming and pitch build-up.
  • Freud-made TiCo Hi-Density General Purpose Blend of Carbide is specifically blended for the ultimate in precision and long cutting life in general purpose applications.
  • New anti-vibration reed design virtually eliminates all vibration and produces the cleanest cuts possible, making the use of a stabilizer unnecessary.
  • Pre-tensioned blades assure that the blade will remain flat through the shocks from cutting and stresses from turning at high speeds.

Freud’s part number is P412 and the full range of Freud saw blades should be available online from both Rockler.com and Woodcraft.com.

Wonderpaper for Scrollsaw users

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

I haven’t had the opportunity to test this stuff yet but wonderpaper seems like a great idea. I’m normally a spray glue user. I don’t particularly like the stuff because it gets all over the place, but it does the job.

Wonderpaper should be a less messy solution to getting your pattern onto your wood because you just peel off the backing and stick it on. Here are their claims for it:

  • Use in printer or copier
  • Eliminates glue
  • Easy to stick on/peel off
  • Reduces sanding
  • Reduces splintering
  • Reduces tear out
  • Glides smoothly on scroll saw table

At $12.00 for 25 sheets (plus shipping & handling) it’s not the cheapest solution but then spray glue has got very expensive and if this stuff is as easy to handle as they claim I’ll certainly be a customer. I’ll tell you more when I’ve had a chance to try it.
