A whole range of durable and safe dust extraction fittings are now on offer over at Woodcraft. With the exception of the aluminum blast gates they’re all made of high quality ABS so they’ll stand up to the constant abrasion of high-flow wood particles.

To finish your system to a professional standard you might want to consider the high capacity Jet Dust Collector which, in addition to the powerful 1.5 hp motor, also has a remote control so you can turn it on and off from anywhere in the shop!

Free Woodwork Plans from Arbortech

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

A new series of free woodwork patterns is being produced by Arbortech. Called “beginner project plans” the first (a seahorse) is an interesting example of what you can do quickly and easily with Arbortech’s excellent power carving system.

The seahorse project uses nothing more complicated than a sheet of ply, some glue, and of course the Arbortech. The plans are available as a free download pdf and, over two pages, take you step-by-step through the process.

Each month a new woodwork project plan will be available to download online at www.arbortech.com.au. Beginner woodworkers also have the chance to have their work displayed on the website with prizes offered for the most creative and unique projects.

The full range of Arbortech’s high quality tools are available at Woodcraft.com

Wonderpaper for Scrollsaw users

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

I haven’t had the opportunity to test this stuff yet but wonderpaper seems like a great idea. I’m normally a spray glue user. I don’t particularly like the stuff because it gets all over the place, but it does the job.

Wonderpaper should be a less messy solution to getting your pattern onto your wood because you just peel off the backing and stick it on. Here are their claims for it:

  • Use in printer or copier
  • Eliminates glue
  • Easy to stick on/peel off
  • Reduces sanding
  • Reduces splintering
  • Reduces tear out
  • Glides smoothly on scroll saw table

At $12.00 for 25 sheets (plus shipping & handling) it’s not the cheapest solution but then spray glue has got very expensive and if this stuff is as easy to handle as they claim I’ll certainly be a customer. I’ll tell you more when I’ve had a chance to try it.

Wonderpaper can be ordered online here: www.wonderpaperbyjason.com

Christmas Woodwork Ideas

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

DominoWith just nine weeks to go until Christmas many of us woodworkers are busy with Christmas gifts - whether that’s one or two items for friends and family or a bunch of different things for craft shows and Christmas fayres.

If you’re anything like me it’s quite often difficult to come up with new Christmas gift ideas. It’s with this in mind that Rockler have set up an area of their online woodworking supplies store which might well provide some inspiration.

Toys and GamesPersonally I love the domino template (perhaps it’s my age!) or maybe a cribbage board or a poker chip box would be more appropriate for someone you know? How about a cast iron coffee mill mechanism to make a special gift or a kit to make a xylophone for a younger member of the family?

There’s a range of over seventy different items that woodworkers could potentially turn into unique and treasured Christmas gifts. many of the items are currently on sale and all offer excellent value.

The whole range can be ordered online at: www.rockler.com
